Monochrome Trends - it's not all black & white

Article by Laura Fletcher RCA.

At New House we are always studying the up-and-coming trends, and look at what's forecast many years ahead. For the last few seasons white has been so strong and ever-present,so we feel that organic whites will remain key until Spring/Summer.

However another interesting trend is for elementary black and white moods, often where two-tone graphics are accompanied by another colour. Dark shades combined with a clean white and inky blue work particularly well.

At New House we have been working on this theme for a while, and you can see this in many of our tea towels such as Herring, Wooof or Shake it are coloured in this way.

Many of the fabrics in our Roller Blind collection are also Monochrome + one extra colour, Charlotte Farmer's 'Tea and Coffee' design features Graphic greys with an extra pop of vivid red :

Mr. Bones, one of our braids from our kids collection is certainly monochrome with a strong graphic, as is our new nautical stripe and latest burnout, Chicago :

As well as whites and mono-tones, we believe we will see plenty of colour in Spring/Summer 17 too with the next generation of popular colours likely to come from nature, mimicking the mineral shades of sand, terracotta’s or browns, vegetable greens in all tones and warmer tones of fruit and flowers. There could be a lot of pinks about, while blues and mauve's will grow in popularity and the strong blues that are current now, will gravitate towards lavender :

Strong graphics with simple shapes will be current, and that's why I designed our vintage zigzag braid and Geometric jute braid :
