Windows in the home and office are definitely getting wider and bigger.
Some of this is due to architects specifying more glass in buildings, the growing popularity of bifold doors, and just the realization that the more light we have in our homes the more joyful they are to live in!
At New House we love this trend but know that big windows need bigger roller blinds. With curtains this is no problem, as fabric can easily be joined. However, joining blind fabric is not so easy as a blind needs to roll up and any seam or join leaves an indent or impression in the cloth.
Back in the 80's and 90's, the standard width of roller blind cloth was just 1.8m, but over the years this grew to 2m. For some of the large windows of today this is not enough, so New House are now making the standard width of many of our fabrics 2.35m. Even this is not enough for some situations, so we are also offering even wider fabrics, like Ciro, Soul and Notus that are 3m wide!
To achieve this, everyone in the supply chain from weavers, dyers and coaters have had to adapt.
At New House we had our own peculiar problems, as our gorgeous 300yr old Herefordshire buildings are from another era but we soon found ways.
We changed the layout of our storage, but most importantly redeveloped one of our three cutting tables, adding an extra metre onto it's width. John of Ross Weld worked on the frame, Vic Gardener of Gardener Engineering helped with the rollers, while our clever carpenter Bernie Whiting clad the table. It now rolls fabric up to 3.2m wide fabric perfectly, every time.
Our new roller fabric collection is being prepared for launch at the BBSA Showcase Fair in October, so rolls of fabric are piling up everywhere. Those below are just a few.. However we are impressed by our new table as it makes it a joy to handle cut the roller blind fabric no matter what the width!
