ITMA 2019

ITMA is still the World's largest textile machinery show and every four years it moves between cities. This time it was in glamorous Barcelona where we showed our latest stop-motion for the first time.

New House have been manufacturing stop-motions since the 1950's, originally for our own use in our warp-knitting plant. In both warp-knitting and weaving you first need to prepare a beam, which is the huge drum of parallel yarns that becomes the fabric warp. This is done on a large frame of yarn bobbins and is called a creel.

Harold Stanier was a prolific inventor and designed his own creels and accillary devices adding tension to the yarns and stop-motions, which detected broken yarns or if a bobbin ran out. His designs were sucessful and New House has manufactured yarn breakage detectors ever since, these days mainly for export.

Our latest model incorporates an internal Infrared beam, than if cut will send a signal to the winding machine (or warper) to stop so the broken thread can be repaired.

We designed it to look like the wing of an aircaft, so it is smooth and easily cleaned if dust should build up on its surface. It also has adjustable loading in the dropper arms, so it can handle yarns that require high tension or lower tension.

We showed it for the first time at ITMA 2019 in Barcelona where it was on the stand of our Italian agent R.T.S. srl.

At ITMA there were 1,700 stands of textile machinery from all over the world and we enjoyed visiting many of them. John Stanier liked to see the latest advances in knitting technology, such as on this Chinese-made 96 feeded circular knitting machine.

We also enjoyed examining the latest sock-making machines, winding technology, creels, examining, weaving, knitting, spinning and rope-making devices amongst many other clever devices.

Once an hour the machines get switched on for 5 minutes, so you can get to see them working.

Of course you cannot visit Barcelona and not see a few sites. John Stanier was last in the city 70 years ago so we went to see how the builders were getting on with the incredible La Sagarda Familia by Gaudi. Maybe if he reurns in another 70 years, they will have finished it!

Just to let you know - most of these images were mine but a few came from the ITMA press image section.
